Event Description:

ACR Conservation Talks:
Wintering Waterbirds on Bolinas Lagoon: How Habitat Change and Rainfall Have Played an Important Role in Determining Abundances and Trends

Bolinas Lagoon is an internationally recognized wetland, supporting a wealth of estuarine life, including ever-changing, year-round assemblages of waterbirds. Monitoring of winter waterbird numbers since the early 1970s has revealed that numbers of most species have been very dynamic. This talk will focus on the findings from these surveys, demonstrating how the numbers of different species have responded to changing source population sizes, annual precipitation, and habitat changes both within and away from the lagoon.

Speaker's Biography: Lynne Stenzel

Senior Wetland Ecologist, Point Blue

Lynne Stenzel has conducted research on wetland birds at Point Blue Conservation Science (formerly PRBO) since the early 1970s, including, in the past, ecological studies of the shorebirds at Bolinas Lagoon, waterbird surveys of the wetlands across the western U.S. and Baja California, nesting cormorants on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge, and mortality of seabirds as witnessed through beached bird surveys.  Her current work is focused on many aspects of the recovery of the threatened Snowy Plovers nesting on the west coast, with a focus on the demography of plovers nesting in the Monterey Bay area.   She also has continued the waterbird surveys of Bolinas Lagoon that began in the early 1970s.
