Date:

Event Description:

AUDUBON CANYON RANCH
Martin Griffin Preserve
ACR Nature Connection: MGP iNaturalist Exploration

Join the ACR Junipers for a day exploring the Martin Griffin Preserve with iNaturalist. Bring a smart device and download the iNaturalist App. Help expand the preserve's digital natural history field guide and learn about the ecological diversity of West Marin. Junipers and other ACR volunteers will be available to help facilitate this exploration.

iNaturalist is a citizen science project and online social network of naturalists, citizen scientists, and biologists built on the concept of mapping and sharing observations of biodiversity. The observations provide valuable open data to Audubon Canyon Ranch and a variety of scientific research projects. Users of iNaturalist have contributed over four million observations since its founding in 2008, and the project has been called "a standard-bearer for natural history mobile applications."

Speaker's Biography: ACR Junipers, Junior Naturalists: Junipers are ACR’s junior naturalists. Every year since 1994, ACR has recruited and provided 30 hours of field-based natural history and leadership training for a group of 30 budding natural scientists in fifth grade. Once trained, program graduates join the Juniper team to work with ACR volunteers and staff in implementing conservation science and stewardship projects and serving as co-leaders for public programs on ACR preserves. The Juniper Program offers a significant head start to the next generation of conservation stewards by providing advanced naturalist training, hands-on conservation experiences, and peer mentoring opportunities for participants through grade twelve and beyond.
