Event Description:
FIRE SYMPOSIUM FOR WEST MARIN

BEGINNING AT 1 PM SUNDAY MARCH 11TH AT THE DANCE PALACE

NOTE:  THIS IS THE DAY THE CLOCKS CHANGE!!!  WATCH THE TIME

The Inverness Foundation is coordinating a Fire Symposium designed specifically for West Marin which will begin at 1 pm on Sunday March 11th.   There will be presentations and Q&A with fire experts from UC Berkeley School of Forestry, local Fire Departments, State and Federal agencies. Dick Spotswood, former elected official and Marin IJ contributor will facilitate public participation and keep the afternoon program moving smoothly

There will be opportunities to pick up literature and sign up with your own neighborhood disaster coordinator. As we are learning in the aftermath of the 2017 fires, it is the neighborhood groups which will keep track of persons who could need assistance in evacuation or even help in hearing the alerts to evacuate.  All residents are strongly encouraged to become familiar with their local groups and to sign up for the area wide notification systems that will be shared at that meeting and at FireSafeMarin*

Community participants involved in the planning include Supervisor Dennis Rodoni, the Marin County Fire Department, the Inverness Fire Department, the Tomales Bay Watershed Council Foundation, UC Berkeley College of Natural Resources, The Pt Reyes Station Village Association and our Disaster Council Coordinators.  We expect to have representatives come on board from both State and National Parks.

Topics will include forest management practices in place now or planned to mitigate risk, evacuation route planning and maintenance, notification practices that we will see in a future emergencies, options when facing the cancellation of fire insurance, and of course, what defensible space means for us.  We will review factors that led to the firestorms of 2017.
