Diana Marto: Golden Room, Canto XXV

Performances September 25th, October 2nd, October 9th, October 16th and October 23rd at 4pm.

Ms. Marto’s installation is an immersive experience of saturated yellow paintings, sculptures and cut-outs, inspired by Chinese spirit paper. There will also be five performances from September 25 through October 23, which will occur at 4 pm each Sunday, either in the gallery or at a specific site in Point Reyes Station, TBA at the gallery on the day of the performance. This is the 25th Canto of Ms. Marto’s epic spirit play with paper and dance, which began in Hong Kong in 1983.

Golden Room is the culmination of a process of discovery over the last two years of art-making upon learning of the death of a dear friend’s firstborn child. Inspired by the gold center inside Chinese spirit paper— gold foil square inside a small rectangle used in funereal practices—she stepped onto a long roll of paper on her studio floor and drew an irregular rectangle using a fat yellow oil paint crayon. Her studio became a jungle of yellow forms—suspended, free-standing, folded, affixed to walls. The forms evolved from the rectangle to liberated cut-out shapes that are sails, calla lilies, whales’ beaks, fins, the sun’s path—all in a dance of form, shadow, light and empty space.

It was in Hong Kong, where she resided for three years, that Diana Marto developed her Canto Series. Her first Canto was presented on an island mountainside, where she danced with a long roll of calligraphy paper. It is synchronistic that Cynthia Tom, who is second generation Chinese-American, is dealing with the theme of human suffering in the gallery adjacent to Ms. Marto’s installation. Marto’s imagery is about source—about the sun and it’s healing powers. She hopes that those who experience Golden Room along with the performances will come away illuminated.

Cynthia Tom: Stories to Tell, Discards & Variances

The Project Space at Gallery Route One presents Cynthia Tom: Stories to Tell: Discards & Variances, tales of human trafficking from a Chinese American family's perspective.

Cynthia Tom's installation explores the tragedy of human trafficking through the experiences of her own Chinese American family. Discoveries about the lives of her grandmother, father and mother inspired the artist to use their stories to touch us, and help us see that human trafficking continues in the Bay Area today. Using vintage imagery from her family, Tom brings us from the past into the present. Her family stories also demonstrate the resiliency of the human spirit. Tom's ultimate project is to encourage us to take an active role in overcoming modern day slavery.

Tom, who is both a painter and mixed media artist, creates an experience of immersion, bringing viewers into her mother's stories. The visitor is surrounded by paintings and found object sculpture; mixed media objects hang from the ceiling in a darkened, moody space. The artist creates an environment that allows her to share personal, painful stories, to remind us that we are all connected and responsible for one another.

"Far from Home" is a yearly exhibition series at Gallery Route One presenting work by 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation artists addressing immigration, diaspora and the issues facing immigrants and their descendants.

Cynthia will be in the gallery from 1:00 to 5:00pm

t.c. moore: Reflections

Reflections is a unique exhibition made with hand etched mirrors by Canadian environmental artist t.c. moore. The idea of using mirrors came from her desire to artistically engage the viewer with the concept of reflection and to engage with the flora and fauna that are threatened, vulnerable, extinct or near extinction. The etchings are ghost-like and white, which makes it somewhat difficult for the viewer to see the images of the plants and animals depicted. However, in searching for the images viewers are distracted by seeing images of themselves. t.c. wants the viewer to become aware of the beauty of all creatures including the human species, but simultaneously to put forth the question: "Why are these creatures disappearing and why are they becoming increasing difficult to find?"

The images vary in size and species from as small as 3”x5” to as large as 28”x47”x8” and are framed in wood, metal, plastic or just pieces of broken shards. The mirrors and their frames are vintage or distressed by the artist to speak to the distressing condition of our environment. Images are singular, often floating and often presented in parts, like an albatross wing or an okapi tongue. This expresses the fragmented or cut off condition that many of these plants and animals face.

Bay-area artist t.c. moore’s work questions the definitions and boundaries of drawing, painting, sculpture and fiber art. A native of Alberta, Moore received her BARCH from the University of Oregon and her MFA in Studio Arts from JFK University. Her work has been exhibited nationally,  and will be featured in a solo show at the Compound Gallery in Oakland this fall. Moore has been nominated for the Eureka Fellowship and her work has been published numerous times in the the West Marin Review. t.c. is Program Coordinator for the Lucid Art Foundation and lives in Santa Rosa.
