Exhibitions October 25 – December 1

Reception for the artists October 27, Sunday 3 to 5 pm.

Salon December 1, Sunday, 4 to 5 pm “Materials and Motives” (artists talk and discussion)

Mary Mountcastle Eubanks highly textured, semi abstract paintings are acrylic and mixed media on canvas that reference landscape elements, particularly areas of and around water. Eubank’s work reflects a continuing love for West Marin, Tomales Bay and the ocean where she has lived and worked as an artist for 40 years.

Eubank as always been interested in mapping, and some of the paintings can be seen as aerial views, either at close or very distant range.  The paintings begin with a pour of thin paint, a “flow” that is partly intentional, partly allowed to move freely. This creates the basic image and idea of the painting. Layers of pigment laced with organic material, often decomposed granite and wood ash are then added.

Map images often underlie these layers, and in many of the paintings handmade paper or casts add dimension, creating “edges” and sensuous surfaces that suggest physical land contours. Another wash or flow of thin paint completes the image.

Jane Ingram Allen will be exhibiting mixed media handmade paper artwork related to birds, nests and feathers along with documentation of her public art project, "For the Birds," recently installed and still on view in Point Reyes Station. The exhibition is one in an ongoing Project Space series, With The Earth, presenting artwork relating to the local/global environment.  Allen’s artwork is made with all natural and biodegradable materials and is intended to bring more attention to birds and preserving habitat for birds.

During September, 2013, Jane Ingram Allen was a resident artist at the Lucid Art Foundation. During her residency she worked at West Marin School in Gallery Route One's Artists in the Schools Program. The artist also held papermaking workshops for children and adults, culminating in a public art installation of a large scale bird's nest in the Point Reyes commons, and numerous small nests installed on Main Street. The nests were made by adults and children out of locally gathered plant material and "feathered" with handmade paper feathers created during the workshops. The AIS and Public Art Installation was co-sponsored by Gallery Route One and the Lucid Art Foundation with additional support from the West Marin Fund.

Look around town for the nests and follow along to GRO where ythere is a nest outside large enough for a small child. After finding the nests come inside and view the exhibitions.
