Igor Sazevich: Time in My Art

Wondering about his upcoming show while at Toby’s Coffee stand, Igor Sazevich set his cup down and an article in the newspaper caught his eye. The word significance captured his attention. He looked up and asked himself, what is significant in my art? He considered all that he had done in the past and realized that it was time to address the times we all are living in. As he sipped his coffee, observations gleaned from the news formed images in his mind. With brush in hand, he decided to tackle what he was visualizing on canvas. This recent work appears in this show.

As part of GRO’s Social Justice series, photographer Peg Hunter’s Confronting Bordersshows us some of the ways people are organizing and coming together in opposition to the forces that want to separate them—from those rallying at border walls and airports to challenge decisions imposed from above, to those forcing difficult conversations about racism and privilege. It is a look at people intent on understanding historical aggressions and suffering, and on seeing each other’s humanity and finding ways to move forward with respect. Confronting Bordersis a visual homage to the powerful human desire for expanded community and common ground in a world that seems immersed in conflict and separation.

Peg Hunter is a documentary photographer focused on immigration, social justice, climate justice and the health of families, communities and the planet. She comes to documentary photography after decades of work in the visual effects industry, both locally at Industrial Light and Magic and in New Zealand. She has a BFA in Film/Video from California Institute of the Arts. Her photography has been published in Yes! Magazine, The San Francisco Examiner, East Bay Express, IMM-Print, Common Dreams,Truthout, Grist, Food & Water Watchand Earth Island Journal. Hunter has followed immigration issues since the mid-2000’s, volunteering several summers with the humanitarian group No More Deaths, whose mission is to prevent deaths and suffering in the Sonoran Desert north of the border in Arizona.

Johanna Baruch: Here | Everywhere

Here | Everywhereis a selection of small paintings by Bay Area artist Johanna Baruch. With these works, Johanna continues her Cosmos Series, creating paintings inspired by images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope.

These richly colored abstractions are interpretations of Johanna’s internal experience as she looks into deep space. Its power, movement, science and mystery all combine to take Johanna into imaginal realms where stars explode, cosmic webs are woven and gas and dust dance to form fantastical shapes. The paradox of containing boundless space within these small, two dimensional paintings creates a tension that draws one in, then invites one to explore the infinite from the inside.

Johanna’s technique borrows from the old masters, where she paints in oil on panel, building up multiple layers of thin, transparent colored glazes that allow for luminescence to shine through and the shadows to deepen. At times, the images resolve themselves into recognizable objects, such as galaxies, planets and nebulae. Other times, their boundaries dissolve into pure movement, pattern and color that reflect their abstracted place within the human imagination.

New York born and raised, Johanna now lives and has studios in both San Francisco and Inverness, California. Her work has been shown in galleries and museums nationally and can be found in corporate and private collections.
