The box show was created 18 years ago by Nick Corcoran and his wife Betty Woolfolk, a founding artist member and the Executive Director of GRO for many years. She was loved by all, especially by Nick.
Every box has a unique story. This is Nick’s story about his 2017 box:
“After Betty's leaving us last year, I didn't know if I wanted to do another box. But one managed to follow me home. I stuck it on top over a lower half of a mannequin that Betty had outside her studio and there it sat, forgotten. After a few weeks, I walked by the box and she appeared. So for the next few weeks the torso and box lived with me in the living room. I would stare at it and imagine what pieces of hers would work. So up and down the stairs I went, on a journey through an amazing collection of stuff. Betty's work was mixed medium so she had metal pieces, wood pieces, plastic pieces, big pieces, little pieces, some pieces I couldn't identify, but she had them, and so much more. What you see is pure Betty - her work both old and new and pieces from her collection. The name of the box became ‘You Can't Build a Betty, Even With Her Stuff.’ To some it brings a smile, to others a tear. We miss you, Betty.”.
