HOLY HIVE, KELLY MCFARLING, BRAINSTORY

Date:
Saturday, November 23, 2019 - 9:00pm to Sunday, November 24, 2019 - 12:00am
Event Description:

Great show coming up at the Western! Three bands - Folk rock, folk and SOUL, and jazz-infused psychedelic rock.

Holy Hive
Homer Steinweiss (Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, Amy Winehouse), the Brooklyn based soul-funk drumming staple, always had a soft spot for folk music. Paul Spring, a young idealist folk singer traveling the country, always had a beautiful falsetto in his back pocket. Little did these two know, when they met on a girlfriend’s family farm in central Minnesota, a musical journey would ensue in which traditions of folk and soul music could cross-pollinate to form Holy Hive. After enlisting a studio assistant named Joe Harrison (Anderson .Paak, Gunna, Lianne la Havas, Joji, Frank Dukes and Nick Hakim) to join the band on bass, a sound started to form — warm and pleasant like a riverside campfire while steady and hypnotizing like a silent night train. Gathering steady momentum from their spring 2019 Harping EP featuring Mary Lattimore and Sasami and a handful of 45rpm singles, Holy Hive’s debut album arrives Spring 2020 on Big Crown Records.

Kelly McFarling

During her ten years in San Francisco, McFarling has released five independent recordings: studio albums, Distractible Child (2010) and Ridgeline (2013), an EP of cover songs, Others (2013), and two live albums, Live at Pirate Ship Laguna (2009) and Live at Eddie’s Attic (2011). She has toured behind her own projects as well as performing with bands like Y La Bamba and Goodnight Texas, and is one-third of the all-female folk trio Glittersnatch with Megan Keely and Wolf Larsen. Over the years, McFarling has shared the stage with artists such as Shovels and Rope, Sean Hayes, Chris Pureka, Jolie Holland, and has made a home for herself in the San Francisco music community.

Brainstory

A jazz-infused psychedelic rock band hailing from the arid lands of the Inland Empire, this power trio forges a path of sonic explorations and cultural and personal liberation through creativity. The band is led by brothers Tony and Kevin Martin with the help of long-time musical collaborator Eric Hagstrom.
