Calling all families with fledglings! Bring your brood out to the Dance Palace on Saturday, April 28 to learn more about bird life. Our Youth & Family Programming will kick off with a special live bird presentation from The Bird Rescue Center.

Docents will bring two Education Ambassadors — (a resident owl and hawk, whose permanent disabilities have made them non-releasable). This is a rare and memorable opportunity to see these wild birds up-close, and learn about our native bird species, their fascinating adaptations and the essential roles they play in our local ecosystems. The Bird Rescue Center is a rehabilitation center for Sonoma County’s wild native birds. Their mission is to assist in the rescue, treatment and release of injured, orphaned or ill birds in the northern San Francisco Bay Area, and to educate the public regarding their ecological importance. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Afterwards join us for activities including:

  • A bird and wildlife touch table
  • Coloring station
  • Barn owl pellet dissection station, courtesy of Pellets, Inc. & Carolina Labs

Each child will receive a pellet to dissect. The Barn Owl is the only bird of prey that swallows its prey whole and then regurgitates the entire skeletal remain. It digests the flesh and then casts the fur and bones of the animal it ate.  Each pellet will contain at least one entire skeletal remain of likely a vole or mole but likely more than one.
