Music @ the Printshop: Johnny & June, Hollis Peach
This month, “Music @ Printshop” features another pair of Point Reyes’ talented locals, Johnny Di Morente of El Radio Fantastique and June McCrory of La Libertà, reuniting for one special musical performance. That’s right, Johnny and June are teaming up to present a set of tunes that will give us a peek into their shared musical past that began in New Orleans approximately fifteen years ago and still influences them today.
Anything could happen because at the time of this writing we’re not entirely sure what kind of music Johnny and June are cooking up for their musical menu. There might be dueling organs or a flamboyant duet. Perhaps, one part ‘El Radio’ mixed with one part La Libertà? Maybe little bit gypsy, a little bit rock n’ roll? Whatever style they choose to perform, we all know that it will be joyful, highly entertaining and imaginative. For the spark of June and Johnny’s collective genius comes from years of honing their craft and a shared love of music and performance.
Opening tonight’s show are our new friends, Hollis Peach. Visiting Ink Paper Plate from Ashland, Oregon, this unassuming, yet highly original duo is currently on a six-week tour of the Pacific Northwest promoting their debut release, “Sometimes We Feel the Same”. Founding members of the rootsy folk orchestra Patchy Sanders, songwriter and guitarist, Dan Sherrill along with his singing partner, Jacqui Aubert, create a finely nuanced musical pairing. Though deceptively simple, their musical arrangements and harmonies are lush, intricate, and often hypnotic in their elegance. Kenneth Pattengale, of the Grammy-nominated The Milk Carton Kids, describes Dan as, “…a monster guitar player.” And this is true, as Dan’s phrasing comes out in the cleverest and subtlest of ways. When all is said and done, Hollis Peach’s music is a powerhouse of subtle gestures and graceful storytelling.
“Sometimes We Feel the Same” was released under the guidance of Grammy-Winning producer/engineer Dave Clauss, with musical contributions from Jeremy McDonald and Larry Packer (The Band). Hollis Peach continues to tour extensively throughout the PNW, having opened for folk-star Brett Dennen and shared several shows with Oakland’s T Sisters. This night promises to be a rare gem full of musical surprises, and we think you’ll enjoy it. Hope to see you!
