Negotiating Cultural Barriers :An Evening with Betty Ramos

Date:
Sunday, September 30, 2012 - 7:00pm to 9:00pm
Event Description:

September 30th Sunday 7pm-9:00pm
An evening of readings and music in Spanish and English with:

Bertha Ramos Santana, (Betty) Mexican-Canadian writer and songwriter

Betty’s novel, Las Hijas de Maíz, combines all of her voices in one book: the songwriter, the cross-cultural consultant, and an irreverent intelligence mixed with humor. The novel deals with the journey of seven Mexican women as they navigate through their cultural conditioning, their issues with The Conquest, and the myth of La Malinche. In trying to find their own voices within the myriad voices of Mexico’s schizophrenia, they explore the creation of different personas through a new language and a new voice. She will be reading and performing from her novel, which includes a CD of her original music and lyrics. (available that evening)

Having lived in all three countries, Betty has dedicated her life and voice to bridging cultures between Mexico and the United States, and between Mexico and Canada. She has more than twenty years of experience as an interculturalista, international business consultant, university instructor and songwriter. She has published several articles and books, including a text on how to negotiate cultural barriers across North America called Negotiating Cultural Barriers: “The Geo-Context”.
