Sun and Moon in Sacred Geometries: New Insights into the Chaco and Maya Cultures

Date:
Saturday, April 20, 2013 - 2:00pm to 4:00pm
Location:
Event Description:

with Anna Sofaer and Christopher Powell

Join us for this presentation showing how the Maya of Mesoamerica and the Chaco culture of New Mexico used solar and lunar building alignments and designs of sacred geometries, as well as profound knowledge of geography, to locate and develop their monumental religious architecture.

The exchange of information between these scholars has brought to the fore a larger picture of the brilliant knowledge of ancient American cultures of astronomy, latitude and geometry. They will describe how the role of this knowledge was a spiritual inspiration to their magnificent achievements in art and architecture and how the power of a large conceptual framework integrating time and space spanned the vast regions of the ancient America.

A 10-minute introductory clip of The Mystery of Chaco Canyon, an award-winning hour-long documentary narrated by Robert Redford and broadcast nationally by PBS, is available on the Solstice Project website.

The event is free; donations accepted with gratitude. Held at Commonweal in Bolinas.
