A Traditional Way of Learning for Young People

Date:
Sunday, October 8, 2017 - 10:00am to 12:00pm
Location:
Event Description:

~Presented by Black Mountain Circle as part of our ongoing Geography of Hope: Ancestors and the Land Series~

Ilarion Merculieff was raised in the traditional Aleut way where he was never told what to do or how. The responsibility of adults was to expose him to self-learning experiences. He was expected to watch, listen and ultimately learn, using what the Aleut call the “true intelligence of the real human being”.  In this way young people are taught not by instruction but rather by practices of observation, encouragement and the cultivation of curiosity. Ilarion will share stories from his childhood and teachings about the importance of this kind of experiential learning. He will also discuss rites of passage and how they create rhythm and connection for children, parents and communities. Families and all ages are welcome.
