What do trees and people have in common?

This year’s Gallery Route One’s Artists in the Schools Program spearheaded by the exuberant Madeline Nieto Hope, asked the students to fully explore this two-fold question: ‘How do trees contribute to a healthy environment?’ and ‘What do trees and people have in common?’

To answer those questions the students from the Shoreline Unified School District, the Tomales Bay Youth Center and the Dance Palace After-School Art Program went on a quest by thoroughly exploring the environment of the trees that live in the Tomales Bay Watershed, as well as studying the health habits of people. Afterwards, the students compared the similarities between the two.

TREE PEOPLE is the culmination of the students’ research, expressed in various forms of artwork and by writing stories or poems. By understanding one tiny strand of the tree’s eco-system the students can then understand themselves. The children, we hope, will see that “I belong here the way this tree belongs here.”

And that’s a powerful lesson indeed!
