Twilled Cattail Mat Weaving with Charlie Kennard

Date:
Sunday, November 10, 2019 - 9:30am to 3:30pm
Event Description:

Join us for a hands-on workshop to make plaited table mats.  Central Mexican rodilleros mats are used for kneeling on when grinding corn. When new, they have a delightful grassy scent and a muted variable green color. The technique involves smacking the strips with a cobble, so this will be a noisy workshop!

Charlie Kennard of San Anselmo is a long-time basket weaver and student of California Indian and other traditional basketry techniques. He has taught for the Point Reyes Field Institute, East Bay Regional Parks Botanic Garden, and more. His work can be found at many museums from the Bay Model in Sausalito to the Oakland Museum. Charlie has created a basketry plant garden at the Marin Art and Garden Center and he is active in native habitat restoration in Marin.
